What is it?
EMDR therapy treats trauma and memories that were left unprocessed. EMDR stands for eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing. It starts from the idea that an overwhelming experience can be stored raw, with the images, sensations and beliefs still wired together. Holding the memory in mind alongside bilateral stimulation, usually eye movements, lets the processing resume: the memory loses its charge without ceasing to be true.
Who it is for
Post-traumatic stress is the best-established indication, but EMDR is not only for extreme events. A difficult birth, an accident, a diagnosis, a separation, an episode of humiliation in childhood: any experience that still hurts in the same way years later may benefit.
What a session looks like
The first sessions do not touch the memory: they are for preparation, for understanding the history and making sure there are resources to steady it. Only then is the memory itself worked on, in short stretches, with pauses. There is no need to recount everything in detail, and that is what makes EMDR possible for people who cannot speak about what happened. Online therapy in English, by video call, with an English-speaking therapist: for people in Portugal and for expats, wherever you live in Europe.
