What is it?
Insomnia is a persistent difficulty falling or staying asleep, with an effect on the following day. It can be sleep-onset insomnia, when falling asleep is hard, middle insomnia, with awakenings during the night, or early-morning insomnia. The most common causes are anxiety, stress and rumination.
Signs and symptoms
Taking more than half an hour to fall asleep, waking several times or far too early, sleep that does not refresh, tiredness and irritability during the day, and worry about sleep itself. It is called chronic insomnia when it happens at least three nights a week for three months.
How we help
The first-line insomnia treatment is cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which does not rely on pills. We work on sleep hygiene, schedules and the thoughts that keep insomnia going, with results that last after therapy ends. Online therapy in English, by video call, with an English-speaking therapist: for people in Portugal and for expats, wherever you live in Europe.
