What is it?
Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) starts from an uncomfortable observation: the harder you work at not feeling something, the more room it takes up. Rather than trying to control thoughts and feelings, it works on holding them without handing them the controls, while clarifying what matters to you, so that decisions start being made from there.
Who it is for
Used for anxiety, depression, chronic pain and stress, and particularly useful when a great deal has already been tried without result, or when the difficulty is something that will not go away: an illness, a loss, a circumstance nobody chose.
What a session looks like
There is less talk of solving and more of noticing. Experiential exercises are used, and often metaphors, because some things are not understood by being explained. Part of the work is naming what you want your life to stand for, and what is on hold while you wait to feel better first. Online therapy in English, by video call, with an English-speaking therapist: for people in Portugal and for expats, wherever you live in Europe.
