What is it?
Systemic therapy, often called family therapy, starts from the idea that each person belongs to systems, the family, the couple, work, and that behaviour only makes sense inside those relationships. Rather than looking for the cause in one person, it looks for the pattern keeping the difficulty alive, including the attempted solutions that have themselves become part of the problem.
Who it is for
Family conflict, difficulties with children and adolescents, couple relationships, and changes that shake a family, such as a separation, an illness or a loss. Also when one person wants to understand their part in a system they feel stuck in.
What a session looks like
It may involve several people in one session, or just one who brings the system with them. The work is on what happens between people, what each expects of the other and what has already been tried. Questions are often circular, asked of one person about the relationship of others, because that is where the pattern becomes visible.
