What is it?

Narcissism is a personality trait we all have to some degree. A narcissist, in the clinical sense, is someone with narcissistic personality disorder (NPD): a stable pattern of grandiosity, need for admiration and lack of empathy. It is one of the personality disorders, rigid ways of thinking, feeling and relating that start early in life and cause suffering. Borderline personality disorder, the best known, has its own page.

Signs and symptoms

Seven narcissistic traits are described most often: an inflated sense of self-importance, a constant need for admiration, lack of empathy, a belief in deserving special treatment, a tendency to use others, envy and arrogance. In a relationship, narcissistic behaviour often means idealising at the start and devaluing later, blaming the other person and not tolerating criticism. Having some of these traits is not having the disorder: only a professional can make the diagnosis.

How we help

If you live with a narcissistic partner, mother or father, therapy is a place to make sense of what is happening, trust your own feelings again, set boundaries and decide what you want from the relationship. If you recognise these traits in yourself, or have a diagnosed personality disorder, ongoing psychotherapy works on how you see yourself and relate to others. We do not diagnose people who are not in the session. Online therapy in English, by video call, with an English-speaking therapist: for people in Portugal and for expats, wherever you live in Europe.

faq

In everyday speech, narcissist means someone very self-centred. In psychology, the term applies to someone with narcissistic personality disorder: persistent grandiosity, need for admiration and lack of empathy, across several areas of life and at a cost to themselves or others.

It helps to set clear boundaries and keep them, to stay out of arguments about who is right, not to count on the person changing because you insist, and to have support outside the relationship. Where there is fear, control or violence, your safety comes first. In therapy we look at your situation, whether it is a partner, a parent or a boss.

We do not speak of a cure, because this is a way of functioning rather than a passing illness. Ongoing psychotherapy can bring real change, but it depends on the person wanting to do it, which is not always the case. Those around them can seek help for themselves without waiting for that.

There are ten, in three clusters. Cluster A: paranoid, schizoid and schizotypal. Cluster B: antisocial, borderline, histrionic and narcissistic. Cluster C: avoidant, dependent and obsessive-compulsive. Psychopath is not a formal diagnosis: it usually refers to traits linked to antisocial personality disorder.
