What is it?

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is made up of obsessions, intrusive and unwanted thoughts, and compulsions, repetitive behaviours carried out to relieve the anxiety those thoughts cause. It is an exhausting cycle, but a treatable one. In Portugal it is known as POC.

Signs and symptoms

OCD symptoms are obsessions, intrusive thoughts about contamination, doubt, harm or order, and the compulsions that relieve them: washing, checking, counting, repeating, seeking reassurance. Rituals can be purely mental. It is OCD when they take more than an hour a day or disrupt life.

How we help

The OCD treatment with the strongest evidence is exposure and response prevention (ERP), a form of cognitive behavioural therapy: gradually approaching what triggers the obsession without performing the ritual, until anxiety falls on its own. When medication is indicated, we coordinate with the psychiatrist. Online therapy in English, by video call, with an English-speaking therapist: for people in Portugal and for expats, wherever you live in Europe.

faq

No. Almost everyone has strange or unwanted thoughts from time to time. It becomes OCD when those thoughts cause great distress, take up a lot of time, and lead to rituals or checking to neutralise them.

Yes. Exposure and response prevention (ERP), a form of cognitive behavioural therapy, is the psychological treatment with the strongest evidence. In some cases it is combined with medication prescribed by a psychiatrist.

In Portugal it is POC (perturbação obsessivo-compulsiva); in Brazil, TOC. It is the same condition as OCD, with the same treatment, so a diagnosis made in another country still applies here.
